Here is the 12-year-old's entry in our latest family game show, now airing weekdays at 6 a.m., and between 8 and 8:30 a.m. weekends.
Judges gave it three out of a possible five points for creativity, but noted that it suffered from serious drawbacks with regard to accessibility.
"While potentially effective, this design would seem to make the trash cans inaccessible to both nocturnal animals and family members seeking to dispose of the mountains of trash they produce on a daily basis," one judge observed.
A second member of the judging panel faulted this entry for its profligate use of mailing tape.
for us it is easy. we just lock the racoons up in the garage for the night. that way when we go out in the morning our garbage is still right where we put it. of course, or garage is trashed.

Perhaps a For Sale sign?

damn. we were going to try the same tactic, only with bungee cords. sheer genius.

A quick update: Is anyone in this family smarter than a raccoon? You be the judge: Since we can't actually get into our garbage cans anymore, we can't move any garbage outside of the house until pick-up day. Zero points for housekeeping, health and hygiene, but no more mess on the lawn.
Still, I am intrigued by the Jim Raff alternative...
